Loretta Greco creates the first regional production of this internationally acclaimed adaptation of Harper Lee’s classic novel at The Huntington.
(BOSTON) – The Huntington announces the cast and creative team of Academy Award winner Aaron Sorkin’s acclaimed adaptation of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, directed by Huntington Norma Jean Calderwood Artistic Director Loretta Greco (Oedipus El Rey). Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird runs at The Huntington from Thursday, October 8 – Sunday, November 8, 2026 at the Huntington Theatre (264 Huntington Ave, Boston, MA, 02115).
Harper Lee’s enduring classic To Kill a Mockingbird is adapted anew as Aaron Sorkin, the brilliant and beautifully idealistic creator of The West Wing and A Few Good Men, returns to writing for the stage.
When upstanding lawyer Atticus Finch seeks justice for a wrongfully accused man, he is tested by the limits of his virtue and the uneasy work of forgiveness in a world ruptured in two. Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize–winning novel has resonated powerfully for over six decades. What does it mean to revisit this beloved classic today with fresh eyes – to consider how far we’ve come, and how far we still need to go?
Artistic Director Loretta Greco creates the first regional production of Sorkin’s soaring adaptation, especially for Boston.
“I thought I knew To Kill a Mockingbird – its trenchant moral questions, its searing heartbreak, its fierce insistence on empathy at all costs,” says Huntington Artistic Director Loretta Greco. “But in the hands of the rigorously idealistic Aaron Sorkin, this muscular adaptation reveals something new and urgent: excavating fresh pleasures and provocations. I can’t wait to share this production with you – it’s a chance to be reunited with a beloved story as if for the first time, with sharper eyes and all the heart – and hope – we can muster.”
Called “a Mockingbird for our moment. Beautiful, elegiac, satisfying, even exhilarating” by The New York Times, Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird premiered on Broadway in 2018 and on the West End in 2022. Hailed as “the most successful American play in Broadway history” by 60 Minutes, it was nominated for nine Tony Awards and five Laurence Olivier Awards. This past summer, it was revived on the West End through September 2026. Blending courtroom drama with a well-known coming-of-age story, Sorkin’s Mockingbird delves into urgent and complex questions about justice, morality, and what it really means to take a stand in a divided world. The Chicago Tribune lauds this adaptation as “genuinely radical and thoroughly gripping.”
“When I was asked to write To Kill a Mockingbird as a play, I knew I couldn’t try to do a Harper Lee impersonation and I knew I couldn’t pretend I was writing it in 1959,” says playwright Aaron Sorkin. “It would have to be a new play and I’m thrilled that the first post-Broadway production is happening on the stage of The Huntington. I hope Boston audiences enjoy this new look at Harper Lee’s classic story.”
Unique to this production, audience engagement programming for Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird is presented in partnership with community partner the ACLU of Massachusetts. The ACLU of Massachusetts is a nonpartisan, nonprofit legal advocacy organization founded in 1920. As the first state affiliate of the national American Civil Liberties Union, it works in the courts, legislature, and communities to protect and expand civil rights and civil liberties across the Commonwealth. Together, The Huntington and the ACLU of Massachusetts will offer audience engagement experiences and community programming inspired by Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, enriching conversations sparked by the production.

Karl Kenzler as Atticus Finch, an Alabama defense lawyer and a father. Credits include Oedipus and Fiddler on the Roof on Broadway, Life & Trust Off Broadway, and Law & Order SVU.
Karen Killeen as Scout Finch, Atticus’ daughter. Credits include The Hills of California at The Huntington, The Dead and 1904 Off Broadway, and KIN on AMC.
Benjamin Izaak as Jem Finch, Scout’s older brother. Credits include John Proctor is the Villain at The Huntington, Until Death at Berkshire Theatre Festival, and Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin on HBO.

Andrew Stevens Purdy as Dill Harris, Scout and Jem’s friend. Credits include The Book of Mormon on Broadway, Newsies at The Gateway, and Crazy for You at Reagle Music Theatre.
Rafael Jordan as Tom Robinson, a Black man accused of a crime. Credits include Caesar and Cleopatra and The Fears Off Broadway, Two Trains Running at Hartford Stage, and runboyrun at Magic Theatre.
Jesse Garlick as Horace Gilmer, a prosecuting attorney. Credits include The Band’s Visit at The Huntington and SpeakEasy Stage, Good and Who Would Be King Off Broadway, and Dalloway: First Love at Gloucester Stage.
Ken Cheeseman as Judge Taylor, a presiding Alabama judge. Credits include Eureka Day and Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead at The Huntington, The Cherry Orchard Off Broadway, and the film The Drama.
Jackie Scholl as Mayella Violet Ewell, a young woman who makes an accusation. Credits include Leopoldstadt at The Huntington, Ghosts at The Gamm, and Circle Mirror Transformation at Harbor Stage Company.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Aaron Sorkin (Playwright) made his Broadway debut with A Few Good Men, which earned him the John Gassner Award for Outstanding New American Playwright. His other plays are The Farnsworth Invention and the stage adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird, which was nominated for 9 Tony Awards and went on to become the most successful American play on Broadway. He contributed a new book for Bartlett Sher’s Lincoln Center production of Camelot. In movies, Sorkin’s screen adaptation of A Few Good Men was nominated for Best Picture. He followed that with The American President and Charlie Wilson’s War, directed by Mike Nichols. In 2011, Sorkin won the Academy Award, Golden Globe, BAFTA and Critics’ Choice Award for writing The Social Network and followed that with nominations for Moneyball and Steve Jobs. He wrote and directed Molly’s Game, The Trial of the Chicago 7–nominated for 7 Academy Awards including Best Picture—and Being the Ricardos. In television, Sorkin wrote and produced Sports Night and followed that with The West Wing, which won two Peabody Awards and broke records for Emmy wins.
Loretta Greco (Director) is The Huntington’s Norma Jean Calderwood Artistic Director. Her extensive national directing credits include Oedipus El Rey, The Hills of California, The Light in the Piazza (Elliot Norton Award for Outstanding Director), The Triumph of Love, Prayer for the French Republic, and Taylor Mac’s world premiere of Joy and Pandemic at The Huntington, the premieres of runboyrun and A Park in Our House at New York Theatre Workshop, The Story, Lackawanna Blues, and Two Sisters and a Piano at The Public Theater, Sweat, The Realistic Joneses, Speed-the-Plow, and Blackbird at American Conservatory Theater, and productions for California Shakespeare, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, McCarter Theatre, South Coast Repertory, Long Wharf, La Jolla Playhouse, and Williamstown Theatre Festival, among others. She is a champion of groundbreaking artists and has longstanding working relationships with esteemed playwrights such as Taylor Mac, Mfoniso Udofia, Lloyd Suh, Barbara Hammond, Luis Alfaro, Octavio Solis, Linda McLean, and Sam Shepard, with whom she worked closely on a five-year Bay Area-wide legacy series and directed the critically acclaimed revivals of Buried Child and Fool for Love. Prior to The Huntington, she was the artistic director at San Francisco’s Magic Theatre for 12 years, as well as producing artistic director of New York’s WP Theater and associate director and staff producer of the McCarter Theatre. She is a New York Theatre Workshop Usual Suspect and the recipient of Bay Area Critic’s Association Awards, a Drama League fellowship, the Princess Grace Award, a Sundance/Luma Director’s fellowship, and the 2018 Zelda Fichandler Award.
Harper Lee (Author) (1926-2016) was born in Monroeville, Alabama. One of America’s most celebrated and influential writers, she is the author of the acclaimed novel To Kill a Mockingbird, along with Go Set a Watchman and the story/essay collection The Land of Sweet Forever, published posthumously in 2025. Lee was awarded numerous literary awards and honors, including the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She died in 2016 at the age of 89.
