Volunteer

Whether backstage‚ in Front of House‚ or working at a special event‚ Huntington volunteers have the unique opportunity to assist the theatre and at the same time become a part of The Huntington family.

More information on becoming a Volunteer Usher below (all others should contact the respective department for opportunities).

Ushers help support The Huntington!

Volunteer ushers are a vital part of the theatre’s Front of House operations. More than 1,280 volunteers are needed for more than 300 performances each season!

Volunteer ushers should check in with the House Manager and Head Usher upon arrival. Arrival times may vary, depending upon the venue. Volunteer ushers are expected to hand out programs, help seat patrons before the show starts, and answer basic questions which patrons have about the theatre. In exchange, ushers can see the performance free of charge and get an inside look at the workings of a professional theatre company.

Many people‚ including couples‚ families‚ and friends volunteer at The Huntington. Please join us!

Why volunteer with The Huntington?

You will be part of a 40-plus-year tradition of local theatre lovers helping our shows run smoothly and meet new (or old) friends. Plus, you get to see the performance!

Volunteer ushers are a vital part of the theatre’s Front of House operations. Joining our 1,000-member list allows you to support us at both the Huntington Theatre Complex (264 Huntington Avenue) and the Calderwood Pavilion (527 Tremont Street).

What to expect as a volunteer usher (more detailed information available in our Volunteer Guide, which is available on all sign-ups or upon request):

  • Arrive at the venue 1 hour before the performance. If you are late for your shift, we may give away your slot to another volunteer.
  • Please dress in all-black business casual clothing. (No jeans, t-shirts, open-toed shoes, or sneakers.)
  • Duties include stuffing programs, seating patrons, and light clean up after the performance.

Volunteers, while not paid, do represent the Huntington, so they are expected to behave accordingly, follow our Code of Respect, and treat our staff and patrons with courtesy and all due consideration.
