Summer Theatre Institute

Summer Theatre Institute is a five-week summer program for students from Codman Academy Charter Public School and Boston Public High Schools.

Students engage in the full theatrical process, from auditioning for the show in late spring, to rehearsing and performing a 90-minute play. Since 2024, the Education Department has partnered with Play On! Shakespeare to use the modern verse translations of Much Ado About Nothing and As You Like It.

Engaging in a process that closely mirrors that of professional theatre productions, daily rehearsals include warm-ups, acting games and exercise, blocking, stage combat, and text analysis work. Technical rehearsals culminate in a public performance on stage at one of The Huntington’s performance venues. This program is for self-selecting students who seek opportunities to further develop their performance skills.

Students are hired as part-time employees in acting and stage management positions. This allows students to gain hands-on experience in the theatre industry, and they can then add The Huntington to their professional resumes. Students learn transferrable administrative skills, such as time management and flexibility while gaining a familiarity with workplace culture.
