This fiendishly funny new play follows an alluring devil named Scratch as he arrives in the country village of Edmonton, and he promises to make the darkest dreams of its locals come true in exchange for their souls. When he meets Elizabeth Sawyer, she should be the easiest to convince — she’s an outcast, branded as a witch for years. So why does she resist Scratch’s deal? This subversive, inventive work by Jen Silverman (The Roommate) is a free adaptation of a 1621 Jacobean comedy recreated with a modern sensibility, and is “devilishly clever and deliciously laugh-packed” (StageSceneLA). Directing is Rebecca Bradshaw.

Approximate run time: Witch plays in approximately 100 minutes with no intermission.

  • There’s no witch in ‘Witch,’ just a bedeviled woman

You won’t find any broomsticks, boiling cauldrons, or burning stakes in Jen Silverman’s “Witch.” The Huntington Theatre Company production, beginning performances at the Calderwood Pavilion this weekend, isn’t about the Salem witch trials or the area’s centuries-long fascination with the occult, cautions director Rebecca Bradshaw. “[It’s] about a strong, independent woman asking for more from the society around her, and she gets ostracized for that.”

  • Concocting a new take on ‘Witch’

The English theater scene of Shakespeare and his contemporaries spent a lot of time reinforcing what it meant to be a witch. The nasty women spent a lot of time over bubbling cauldrons filled with newts’ eyes and dogs’ tongues and cursing men into impotence.
