EPIC: Empowered Performers in Conversation

The Huntington Theatre Company’s Education Department believes in the power of theatre to serve as a medium for social justice and to amplify the perspectives of members of our community. EPIC: Empowered Performers in Conversation provides a forum in which participants cultivate their own creative voice and use artistic expression to explore and discuss issues of importance to them. EPIC is a program that will have a variety of different cohorts, currently there are two - EPIC: Youth and EPIC: Elders.

EPIC: Youth

EPIC: Youth is an after-school program which provides students who are interested in playwriting, acting, and directing an opportunity to create their own performance piece. Education staff guide students through research, discussion, writing exercises, ensemble building, actor training and eventually, the creation of a performance piece. All performances are followed by a post-show discussion so student performers can discuss the piece, their process of writing the piece, why those chose the topic/theme of the piece, etc.

Interested high school students will be asked to complete an application for consideration. Class size for EPIC: Youth will not exceed ten students, and will include students from Boston and Greater Boston communities.

EPIC: Elders

EPIC: Elders maintains EPIC’s original mission of empowering individuals through creative expression and providing a platform for them to tell stories about topics and issues that matter to them. This program happens at the Huntington Avenue YMCA and is open to anyone 50 or older. This branch will also culminate in a performance of the group’s original work.
