EPIC: Empowered Performers in Conversation

Not Waiting on the World to change staged reaging

The Huntington Theatre Company’s Education Department believes in the power of theatre to serve as a medium for social justice and to amplify the perspectives of members of our community. EPIC: Empowered Performers in Conversation provides a forum in which participants cultivate their own creative voice and use artistic expression to explore and discuss issues of importance to them. Over the last 5 years, the original form of EPIC has gained traction as a premiere art-making opportunity for young people from Greater Boston.

EPIC: Youth

EPIC: Youth is an afterschool program which will provide the opportunity for student playwrights, actors, directors and theatre enthusiasts to engage in research and debate, writing exercises, ensemble building, and actor training.  Education staff will guide and mentor a diverse group of young people from communities throughout the greater Boston area in the process of writing and devising an original piece of theatre that provides a window into young people’s experiences and fosters dialogue.  The program's final production will be performed at the Huntington and throughout the local community for family, friends and neighbors. Interested high school students will be asked to complete the application process before entering the program.

EPIC: Elders

We will add our first new ensemble, EPIC: Elders, based at the Huntington Avenue YMCA, in spring 2019. This new ensemble will maintain EPIC’s original mission of empowering individuals through creative expression and providing a platform for them to tell stories about topics and issues that matter to them. The program will culminate in a performance of participants’ original work. There will also be an opportunity for the EPIC: Elders and EPIC: Youth ensembles to share and engage with each other around their work.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Boston Cultural Council, a local agency which is funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, administered by the Mayor's Office of Arts and Culture.
