THE HUNTINGTON AND COOLIDGE CORNER THEATRE CONTINUE THEIR “STAGE AND SCREEN” COLLABORATION THIS SPRING

The Huntington continues its series in partnership with Coolidge Corner to connect stage and screen, while sharing their original production of Sojourners with audiences just in time for the next few plays in the Ufot Family Cycle
(BOSTON) – The Huntington and Coolidge Corner Theatre announce three upcoming screenings, all connected to Huntington production offerings this season. Two of the three screenings are part of the larger, long-standing partnership series “Stage & Screen,” and the third is a special screening of The Huntington’s 2024 production of Sojourners by Mfoniso Udofia, the first play in Boston’s Ufot Family Cycle, captured by Kligerman Productions.
The Stage & Screen series is a collaboration between The Huntington and Coolidge Corner Theatre that explores the depictions of shared themes in upcoming Huntington productions and acclaimed films. Throughout their season, Huntington artists appear at the Coolidge to discuss the films that inspire and impact their work, and the different ways in which film and theatre can enlighten and inform audiences.
Coming up on February 10, 2025 at 7pm, the Coolidge will screen The Huntington’s 2024 production of Mfoniso Udofia’s play Sojourners, the origin story in the 9-play Ufot Family Cycle. Over 30 Boston area organizations are collaborating together to bring this epic story of three generations of a Nigerian American family to life, and it marks the first time this Cycle will be complete and performed in its entirety for one community. The Huntington’s 2024 production was a Boston Theatre Critics Association “Critics’ Pick,” and it introduced Abasiama, the Ufot family matriarch – a dynamic and forward-thinking woman from whom an entire Nigerian lineage in America emerges. This pro-shot recording was captured with eleven cameras by Kligerman Productions, and offers an exciting opportunity for audiences to experience the play for the first time or revisit the story in high-definition before the next few Ufot plays are mounted this spring, starting with The Grove at The Huntington’s Calderwood Pavilion at the BCA from February 6 – March 9, 2025.
In Sojourners, marriage, migration, and the pursuit of education collide with surprising humor when a young and brilliant Nigerian couple arrives in Houston in 1978, looking to earn their degrees and bring insights back to their home country. But when Abasiama discovers that her husband has been seduced by Motown records and American culture, she begins a surprising friendship with a local woman named Moxie. Director Dawn M. Simmons helmed the lively and nuanced Sojourners, following her acclaimed production of K-I-S-S-I-N-G [2023 Elliot Norton Award for Outstanding New Script].

Next up, on Monday, March 3, 2025 at 7pm, the Coolidge will screen The Rules of the Game, Jean Renoir’s scathing critique of corrupt French society, cloaked in a comedy of manners. At la Colinière, the deceptively idyllic country estate of a wealthy Parisian aristocrat, a selection of society’s finest gather for a rural sojourn and shooting party. Over the course of the weekend, they reveal themselves to be absurdly cruel and vapid.
This screening is in conversation with The Huntington’s production of the classic French farce, The Triumph of Love (running at the Huntington Theatre, 264 Huntington Ave, from March 7 – April 6, 2025). This screening will include a discussion with artists from The Triumph of Love.

Finally, on Tuesday, May 6, 2025 at 7pm, the Coolidge will screen Summertime, a sublimely bittersweet tale of romantic longing directed by David Lean and set in the sun-splashed glory of Venice at the height of summer (filmed in radiant Technicolor). In a tour de force of fearless vulnerability, Katharine Hepburn portrays the conflicting emotions that stir the heart of a lonely, middle-aged American tourist who is forced to confront her insecurities when she is drawn into a seemingly impossible affair with a charming Italian shopkeeper (Rossano Brazzi) amid the ancient city’s canals and piazzas. Lean’s personal favorite among his own films, Summertime is an exquisitely tender evocation of the magic and melancholy of a fleeting, not-quite-fairy-tale romance.
This screening is in conversation with The Huntington’s production of the Tony Award-winning musical The Light in the Piazza (running at the Huntington Theatre, 264 Huntington Ave, from May 8 – June 15, 2025). This screening will include a discussion with artists from The Light in the Piazza.
