WGBH'S JARED BOWEN REVIEWS BAD DATES

LISTEN ON WGBH

Read the transcript of the interview:

"Very, very fun! A star turn from Haneefah Wood! Bad Dates delivers!"

Joe Mathieu: Well, Jared, do you want to go on a "Bad Date?"

Jared Bowen: I do, actually, because there’s every reason to. Yeah, dating is detrimental to your health but not to the theatre, it turns out. Bad Dates just opened at the Huntington Theatre Company. It’s playing through February 25. This is a piece that people may know. It’s Theresa Rebeck’s play and it is one of the most popular shows ever in Huntington theatre history when it first premiered 15 years ago. So this is the 15th anniversary production and this is where we find Haley Walker, played by Haneefah Wood. People might remember her from Vanya & Sonia & Masha & Spike. She was the clairvoyant. She gets this wonderful star turn here as the solo performer in this piece, she plays Haley Walker a woman who is divorced raising her teenage daughter, she’s the manager of a very upscale very popular restaurant who just can’t seem to find her way into a relationship and the dating world. Let’s take you into some of the play, and here is Haneefah Wood as Haley really describing the moment she realizes she needs to start dating again.

HALEY: What I realize in some sort of strange hallucinatory moment is that the bug guy is looking kind of good, and the things he’s saying about bugs are really kind of fascinating, and it is then that I realize that maybe it’s been too long since you’ve been on a date. When the bug guy starts looking good, it’s time to get out of the house!

Jared: There were a lot of laughs, including from me, I mean this is a very, very fun piece where this woman is just trying to get on her feet and this is an incredible feat for the actor Hannefah Wood who, as she’s in her home, very well appointed home, as she’s getting dressed, trying on different outfits, as she’s trying on different shoes - she has a massive shoe fetish, every closet is filled with shoes. She’s also describing these dates that she’s trying to go on and how’s she’s trying to find her way. It’s just a monumental task, and she does it with such ease. You’re completely with her. Bad Dates delivers where you want to pal around with her, root for her, and have her on speed dial.

Fascinating!

A grippling hour and a half.
