Douglas W. Schmidt has been the scenic designer at American Conservatory Theater for more than 200 productions over the past 30 years, including Carey Perloff’s production of Travesties. Highlights include New York Drama Desk Awards for the Andrews Sisters’ musical Over Here! and Ira Levin’s Veronica’s Room, Neil Simon’s They’re Playing Our Song, Bernard Slade’s Romantic Comedy, Howard Ashman and Marvin Hamlisch’s musical Smile, and the original production of Grease, which held for many years the record for the longestrunning show in Broadway history. Mr. Schmidt’s other Broadway credits include recent revivals of 42nd Street (Tony, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics’ Circle Award nominations) and Into the Woods (Tony nomination, Drama Desk Award, and L.A. Ovation Award). In 2007 he designed Il Trittico for The Metropolitan Opera.
