Invisible Man Curtain Calls

Name: Teagle Bougere

Hometown: Smoke Bend, Louisiana

What is one universal theme or message presented by the play? There are many, but the inability to be true to himself is one that plagues invisible man throughout his journey.

When have you felt that you were invisible? Being dismissed and stereotyped are forms of invisibility, which I experience, to varying degrees, everyday. They are insidious forms that occur in stores, museums and even in the park when I go for a run. Who I am is made invisible and sacrificed to a stereotype of a who I am.

Is there anything you wanted to do when you were younger but not now? What changed? I wanted to be many different things when I was a younger (airline pilot, broadcaster for the San Francisco giants, travel with the circus etc. etc.).  Becoming an actor struck me as a way of doing everything for a time. I can't think of anything that I wanted to do then and don't now.

Name: De'Long Grant

Hometown: Well, I was born in Providence, RI, but I say that I was reared in Northern Minnesota because that is where I spent my formative years. So, Duluth, MN is home.

What is one universal theme or message presented by the play? For me one of the major Universal themes is identity. Invisible Man is always searching for who he is

When have you felt that you were invisible? Performing in the show has made me acutely aware of moments in life when I am forced into invisibility as opposed to those in when I make myself invisible. I realized I try and make myself invisible on public transportation. I am a tall, broad man who can be courteous to his own detriment, so on the subway I tend to take up as little space as possible.

Is there anything you wanted to do when you were younger but not now? What changed? I really liked being in charge of things, so at a young age I thought I wanted to teach, but I do not have the patience that teaching requires.

Name: Edward Hyland

Hometown: I come from Staten Island, New York which is one of the five boroughs of New York City.

Previous Huntington Credits: I have worked at the Huntington doing G.B. Shaw's Heartbreak House playing Boss Mangan and was directed by Darko Tresnjak.

What is one universal theme or message presented by the play? As for a message presented by the play we must all acknowledge that self awareness is a quality that we all strive to attain, and Invisible Man demonstrates throughout that striving should be a constant in our lives. The journey that we take in life is always in flux and as human beings we need to recognize that changes both inside and outside of ourselves are better handled when we know who we are.

When have you felt that you were invisible? As soon as my children became teenagers.

Is there anything you wanted to do when you were younger but not now? What changed? As a young man I tried my hand in many different professions but was never satisfied until I found the theatre.  It was there that I felt not only at home but fulfilled by being able to reach out and touch people in a way that I had never before experienced.  It's lifted me up my whole life.  When I go to work . . . I play!

Name: Deidra Starnes

Hometown: My hometown is Washington, DC

What is one universal theme or message presented by the play? For me, one of the universal themes presented by The Invisible Man is that one's invisibility is perpetuated by allowing others to define and determine who you are. To that end, I think that one must have a clear understanding of self so that what others think, say, or feel about you matters not.

When have you felt that you were invisible? The answer is absolutely. Once when I was younger, I was the only female on an independent film production. I would make suggestions or come up with ideas that the director would absolutely disregard. One of the other males on team, who noticed what was happening and felt there was validity to what I was saying, would purposefully wait a few minutes and repeat what I said. The director would agree and love it.

Is there anything you wanted to do when you were younger but not now? What changed? I used to want to be an elementary school teacher, but I am sure I do not have all of the necessary qualities to be a highly effective classroom teacher and yet I love to teach.
